Saltburn’s water balance cliff lift has enjoyed record numbers of visitors this year. Opened on 28th June 1884, this is the oldest remaining waterbalance cliff lift in Britain, the height of the lift is 120 ft and the length of the track is 207 ft. Refurbished with stained glass windows, it’s a beautiful example of Victorian engneering. Between April and September, a record 120,223 visitors used the lift to hear down to one of the cleanest beaches in the UK

But it’s been a busy year for Saltburn, because additionally, directly opposite the lift lies Saltburn Pier which this year has been voted Pier Of The Year by the UK’s National Pier Association, beating such prestigious venues as Great Yarmouth to the title.

We’re situated right in the centre of Hunley Hall Golf Glub. In fact you have to drive through the golf course to reach The Arches! Hunley Hall is an open club and you can book a time to tee off and simply pay a green fee for a game. We’ll be writing more about our golfing neighbours soon including more information about the course and when you can play

Did you know that we are just 350 metres from the Cleveland Way as it draws closer to the Yorkshire Coast? Many of our guests are walkers coming to the end of the Coast to Coast journey made famous by Wainwrights Walks, presented by Julia Bradbury on television recently. Even if you don’t have the time to enjoy the full Cleveland Way, it’s a perfect 25 minute stroll down to the beach at Skinningrove, then a slightly more energetic climb back up the hill to return to The Arches. Perfect for working up an appetite!

We’re just a short drive from Redcar Racecourse and many of our guests use The Arches as the perfect base for their day at the races. The next meeting in August is the Carribean Carnival, a big family event that promises to be a great day out. At this time of year, there’s a lot happening in the North Yorkshire area, so we’ve started our Things To Do section of the blog to give guests some ideas if you have some free time when you’re staying with us. Probably the biggest resource you will find right now is the official Yorkshire tourist website which has some great ideas and deals for family days out.

Our new website is developing all around us as we speak. Unlike normal static websites, this one will be a constantly changing thing, with season news about local events, things to do and what’s been happening here at The Arches. There will be plenty of places for you to comment, so feel free to write and tell us what you’d like to see more of here.

We’ll be adding lots more information on the things happening in Yorkshire this summer and some new pictures of our hotel and some newly refurbished rooms we’ve just made available.
