Further Afield in Yorkshire.
North Yorkshire is such a large county that it would be impossible to visit everything in one visit.
The biggest place within an easy drive is the cathedral city of York. You could easily spend several days here, not just exploring the many historic sites, but shopping in the modern stores and gift shops tucked away in such famous areas as The Shambles. The National Railway Museum has it's headquarters at York and offers free admission nearly all year round. York Racecourse is an excellent day out for those who like a flutter and for a more historical perspective, the amazing York Minster and Yorvik Viking Centre show some of the vast history of the city.
On the edge of the city is the Yorkshire Air Museum with everything from WW2 bombers to Cold War Jets. Another place full of military history is The Eden Camp military museum, where the kids can explore what it was like to live in WW2 and the adults can reminisce and tell the kids they've never had it so good.
On the way to York is the market town of Helmsley with The Helmsley Walled Garden and the amazing Gothic ruin of Rievaulx Abbey while not far away is Castle Howard, still a family home, but open to the public and famous as the film location of many programmes including Brideshead Revisited.
